SPORTPERSON
DAVO - SPORTPERSON 2000
Extreme skiing is available to a small number of skiers only who have mastered the top skills
of mountaineering and Alpine skiing and blended them into a whole. Taking it to the limit is what
makes extreme skiing ideal for marketing purposes.
Davo Karnicar was announced as Laureus World Alternative Sportsperson of the Year 2000 as
well as The Best Athlete in the World in Men`s Journal magazine in the USA.
*****************
Asia - Mt. Everest (8.850 m) - accomplished on 7 October 2000.
Roughly 60 million years ago, India -- then a separate continent -- began to move northward
rapidly, eventually colliding against Asia. The push crushed the land on the continental shores
into what is now the highest mountain range in the world -- the Himalayas, a Sanskrit word meaning
"of snow."
Shrouded in mystery due to its height, remote location and Chinese and Nepalese restrictions
on access, Mt. Everest has been the dream of climbers since the British first glimpsed the peak in
the 1850s.
Africa - Mt. Kilimanjaro (5,894 m) - accomplished in November 2001.
Mt. Kilimanjaro is situated inside the Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania; it is the
highest mountain in Africa and the tallest freestanding mountain on earth.
Europe - Mt. Elbrus (5,642 m) - accomplished in May 2002.
Mt. Elbrus is the highest point in Europe. The Caucasus Main Range is considered to be a
border between Europe to the North and Asia to the South in most (but not all) guidebooks and
encyclopaedias.
South America - Mt. Aconcagua (6,969 m) - accomplished in January 2003.
The Aconcagua Mountain is the highest peak of the South Occidental Hemisphere and the highest
one of the American Continent. It is an important reference in the beloved circuit of the seven
summits.
Australia - Mt. Kosciusko (2.230 m) - accomplished in August 2003.
Mt. Kosciusko ("Kozzy" to the Aussies) is the highest mountain on the flattest and smallest
continent. A thoroughly uninspiring peak, Kosciusko gets a lot of abuse, particularly from those
who claim that the Australia/Oceania continent's rightful contribution to the "Seven Summits" is
Puncak Java or Mt. Cook.
North America - Denali (6,193 m) - accomplished in June 2004.
It is a mountain which can flash freeze you to death in a few seconds but one which can be
seen further than any continental highpoint (250 miles).
MISSION TO DO:
The extreme skier Davo Karnicar of Slovenia plans to take on the world's other highest
mountains after having successfully skied down Mt. Everest. Skiing down from the world's highest
peaks will always be a niche market, limited to the few who are willing to climb up in the first
place, let alone skilled enough to ski down as well.
Antarctica - Mt. Winson (5,140 m)
- skiing planned for November / December 2006.
The least-known continent, the coldest and most lifeless place on earth that nevertheless
hides unseen beauty. The mountain massifs there are mostly still unexplored.
